What is the use of the main search box on the Library Homepage?
The Library’s search box is EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), which you can access directly on the Hekima Library Page. It is a one-stop search engine that allows both physically present and distance learning (remote) students to search across nearly all of Hekima’s Library resources simultaneously. A single search query will pull results from:
- Physical books on the shelves
- Academic e-journals and subscription databases
- E-books (including Cambridge, Proquest, Taylor & Francis, Perlego and Pearson collections)
I am a remote student; how do I make sure I only see items I can read online?
When you perform a search in the Discovery box on the Hekima Library Page, look at the left-hand filter panel on the results page. Check the box for “Full Text” and select “eBooks” or “Academic Journals” under the Source Types. This filters out physical books on campus and shows only resources you can access immediately from home.
I found a physical book in the search results. Can I read it online?
Not automatically. If the search result shows a shelf location (Call Number), it is a physical print book.
Physical Students:
- Note the call number and locate it on the library shelves.
Remote Students:
- Click the title to see if an electronic version is available, or request a digital copy of a specific chapter.
The search Result shows "Full Text Available," but when I click the link, it asks me to pay. Why?
This happens if your session has timed out or if you bypassed the login screen. Go back to the Hekima Library Page, refresh the page, click an official database link to trigger a new login, and then try searching for the article again. You should never pay for a resource. If you still cannot access any resource that we have subscribed to, contact library.support@hekima.ac.ke
Can I save articles and books found in the Discovery Service?
Yes! Within the EBSCO Discovery interface accessed via the library page, you can click the Folder icon next to any article or e-book to save it to your personal dashboard. As long as you are logged in, you can access your saved folder from any computer, anywhere.
Can I download an entire e-book to read offline?
Most of our e-book platforms allow you to download chapters as PDFs permanently; some allow you to download the entire book or journal article, while others can only be read online.
How do I access books on my Search Results from “HUC Perlego E-Book Catalog”.
Although Hekima has paid subscription to Perlego E-books, accessing books on this platform is quite different from other databases. The books in Perlego can only be read but cannot be downloaded. Access to Perlego books requires a separate login. Kindly contact library.support@hekima.ac.ke for assistance,
