Master of Theology

We live yet again in a Kairos, a historic moment. The world’s religious demographics indicate a tremendous boom in the Global South, especially in Africa. Africa is at the heart of global theological relevance, a brewing pot of faith and theological formation, and Hekima University College (HUC) is set to shape global faith history and destiny, proffering appropriate theological leadership and formation for the future.

This exciting opportunity is not happening for the first time, as Africa significantly shaped early and medieval Christianity. Major theological schools and scholars emerged or flourished on the African continent. As such, engulfed, inspired, and motivated by the “faith of our fathers,” HUC readily embraces this opportunity.

While it may look attractive, and we are enthused to make history, we are also not naïve about the enormous challenges of this noble opportunity. On the one hand, the Global North is subtly menaced by atheism and postmodernism. On the other hand, the Global South is troubled by religious extremism and intolerance. Yet, the current world’s religious history proverbially whispers the urgent mission of African Christendom: may it not be heard that the Christian faith dies in the hands of Africans. Hence, HUC engages in history of this kind to create a desired future through profound conceptualisation and meticulous implementation of a holistic and rigorous theological formation, where contextual wisdom re-fashions global trends.

The Jesuit School of Theology at Hekima University College stands out as the theological school par excellence on the continent, sufficiently competent to provide the much-needed global theological leadership and faith formation. Thanks to its Ignatian heritage, HUC integrates discernment, context, faith, and justice as vital methodological spectra for theological formation so that beyond academic benefits, theology is lived. At HUC, we do not just teach theology, we create theological traditions.

Our recently approved Master of Theology programme is carefully designed to:

  • Engage in a rigorous inquiry and in-depth understanding of the deposit of faith
  • Focus keenly on the articulation of theological truths
  • Ensure the application of theology to concrete existential contexts, particularly in Africa
  • Explore the influence of theology in shaping pastoral, ecumenical, interfaith, and societal transformative relations

Moreover, our astute, competent, experienced, internationally formed, and professional faculty truly attests that the present and future of theological formation are secure. Our international peer-reviewed journal, Hekima Review, further demonstrates HUC’s commitment to responding to matters of theology, governance, and peace studies. Our state-of-the-art library facilitates and elicits passion for in-depth research.

We welcome you to join the HUC theological faculty today. Together, let us shape tomorrow’s faith and theological history, narrative, and destiny. See you soon!

Herzlich,

Stephen Eyeowa, SJ.

Acting Academic Dean.
